Patalpuri Temple | Undying Banyan, Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh
Patalpuri Temple is one of the sacred and ancient temples in Allahabad. The temple is situated inside the Allahabad Fort. The salient feature of the temple is its immortal Banyan tree which you will be spotted in the close proximity of the temple. The immortal Banyan tree is popularly known as either Akshayavat or Akshay Vat.
As per famous folklore, once the sage Markandeya asked Narayana to show him a specimen of the divine power. Narayana flooded the entire world for a moment. As a result, demolition took place everywhere. But the immortal tree stood firmly. According to the Indian Mythologies, people in those days used to throw themselves from the immortal Banyan tree in order to get salvation.
People also believed that the temple was visited by Lord Rama and Prahalada. Chinese writer and traveller Hiuen Tsang had also visited the holy shrine during his visit to this place. The similar type of immortal trees are located at Gaya in Bihar and Varanasi.
