Kal Bhairav Temple | Ujjain Famous Temples
Kal Bhairav Temple is one of the ancient temples located on the banks of the River Shipra in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. It is highly revered temple and is dedicated to the deity Kal Bhairav, the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. The astonishing aspect of the temple is the devotees offer liquor to the Lord Kal Bhairav. The idol drinks the entire alcohol on the plate. Where does the alcohol really went to?. According to the traditional beliefs, Lord Brahma decided to write the fifth Veda. At that time, the rest of the Gods went to meet Lord Shiva in order to stop Brahma from writing the fifth Veda. However, Lord Brahma wouldn’t listen to anyone words. Then Shiva got anguished and opened his third eye through which he manifested Lord Bhairav who beheaded the fifth head of Lord Brahma.
Bhairav tried a lot to get respite from the sin of Brahmhatya. But he failed. Ultimately he met Lord Shiva who assisted Bhairav. Abiding by the instructions of Lord Shiva Kal Bhairav went to burial sites near the banks of the River Shipra to do a penance. Finally, he washed away all his sins with his great penance.
